Oak Point professors Dr. Lynda Crawford, Dr. Nancy Reese, and Laurie Zack, along with Dean Dr. Rebecca Zukowski, worked together to establish the first Dedicated Education Unit (DEU) at Presence Holy Family Medical Center in Des Plaines, which was implemented this January 2016. After a very successful first term, they are moving onto the next phase in term D where a level 1 student will be paired with a role student and a Clinical Instructor (CI). This new DEU is a wonderful accomplishment from our faculty as it has created a learning environment for the students that offers them more hands-on clinical experience. With the help of the Clinical Instructors there are more individuals to assist the students while in clinicals. The DEU is run by faculty members Laura Domagala and Karla Smith, who oversee the Clinical Instructors at Holy Family. The Clinical Instructors are nurse/staff members of Holy Family who showed interest in becoming trained to teach our students. The program has been very well-received by everyone, including patients and family members. The students were gifted a scheduling board by the family of one patient, who wanted to show their appreciation for all the great care the students have provided.
