Catherine McIlwain and Theresa Jones Visit DC to Lobby on Behalf of ICD-10

Theresa Jones and Catherine McIlwain recently attended the AHIMA Leadership and Advocacy and Hill Day meetings held in Washington D.C. As officers serving on their respective regional (ILHIMA) and local (CAHIMA) executive boards, they took part in lobbying Illinois state congressmen and senators to advocate for the implementation ICD-10 coding system without any further delays. Theresa met with Representative Bobby Rush’s Legislative Assistant, Orlando Jones, and Catherine met with Representative Luis Gutierrez’s Legislative Assistant, Kate Johnson. Additionally, they both met with Senator Dick Durbin’s Legislative Fellow, Elise Ackley, as a group.

Leadership in Health Information Management

AHIMA has demonstrated leadership in industry standards, regulation and legislation.  AHIMA collaborates with members of Congress, federal agencies (including CMS, CDC, NIH-NLM, ONC) and standards bodies to address the adoption of ICD-10-CM/PCS, administrative simplification, privacy and standards to establish EHRs and HIE.  Members working through their state associations address similar issues at the local level. AHIMA also serves as the designated secretariat for the International Standards Organization 215 Health Technology Workgroup and convenes the US Technical Advisory Group that provides input into the ISO-215 organization.

Implementation of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS

Implementation of the ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS classification systems is crucial to achieve an environment that includes universal use of EHR and personal health record (PHR) systems, and interoperability. The implementation of ICD-10-CM/PCS and clinical terminologies will facilitate true EHR return on investment and support improvements in quality and performance measurement.
