Surgeon General Visits Oak Point University

December 29, 2012 // Oak Point University

This December, Oak Point University was proud to welcome Vice Admiral, Dr. Regina Benjamin, 18th Surgeon General of the United States, to our campus.  Dr. Benjamin graciously gave the commencement address at graduation and took the time to shake each graduate’s hand as they crossed the stage to receive their diploma.  In her address, Dr. Benjamin talked about the importance of public health and congratulated the graduates on behalf of President Barack Obama.  The December 2012 class had 66 BSN and BSN for RN graduates.

Oak Point University was also grateful for the opportunity to give Dr. Benjamin a tour of the new campus in Wicker Park, which features state of the art classrooms and advanced simulation lab facilities.  Her visit to the University gave its members a chance to get to know an impressively accomplished woman.

Dr. Benjamin received her BS in chemistry from Xavier University, attended the Morehouse School of Medicine and received her M.D. from University of Alabama at Birmingham.  From her early days as the founder of a rural health clinic in Alabama – which she operated despite damage and destruction inflicted by Hurricanes Georges in 1998 and Katrina in 2005, followed by a devastating fire in 2006 – to her leadership role in the worldwide advancement of preventive healthcare, Dr. Benjamin has forged a career that has been recognized by a broad spectrum of organizations and publications.
