Susan Siokos Wins Best Dissertation Award

October 10, 2017 // Oak Point University

Congratulations to Oak Point Licensed Professional Counselor Susan Siokos, EdD, LPC, who received the Emerging Scholar Award for Best Dissertation from Argosy University on October 1. She successfully defended her Counselor Education and Supervision EdD program dissertation,“Brief Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for Coping With Anxiety in an Upper-Division Undergraduate Nursing Program.”

Susan’s dissertation, a quasi-experimental quantitative study employing a mindful-based stress intervention with self-selected control and experimental groups, resulted in a large effect size, and significant positive findings. Susan incorporated Brief Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction training for participants over a four-week period and used the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory to measure pre and post intervention scores. Susan’s dissertation shed light on how students in a short-term high-stress nursing program can experience significant reduction of stress through engagement in mindful stress-reduction practices. Susan’s significant results not only demonstrates one way to aid students in intense nursing programs, but could also be applied in high-intensity programs at other universities.
