I Wanted to Become a Great Nurse Because of My Aunt

I decided to become a nurse a long, long time ago. My aunt had type 2 diabetes. Being an immigrant, she didn’t have insurance, and we would go to Cook County Hospital hospital for any kind of problems. That’s the only place you could go to, and just seeing the care that she received there, you know, there were some really great nurses and some not-so-great nurses. And I wanted to be one of those great nurses because I knew what that meant.

It’s a Privilege to Help Patients

I’m a family nurse practitioner. I think nursing is so important. And the most important role for any nurse is to be an advocate when you have a patient. The patient is not there because it’s a happy time in their lives; it is probably the worst time in their lives. It is a very confusing time, so the patients are really vulnerable. It’s a privilege to be that person that helps that patient.

Being a Badass Is Doing Your Best

A few of my friends nominated me and also my mom. I think that being a badass nurse doesn’t apply just to nurses. I think you can be a badass physician, a badass teacher, a badass chef. One thing that my mom has taught me is she wasn’t like you have to get As, you have to excel; it was more about whatever you do, do the best in it, and so being a badass nurse just means that every day that I go to work I’m giving it my 110 percent.

My Name is Sarah, and I am a badass nurse.
