Your Role as a Medical Laboratory Scientist
Why become a Medical Laboratory Scientist?
• They perform complex tests on fancy equipment to help doctors diagnose and treat patients.
• They help people live better, healthier lives by using tests and data to identify and treat terrible medical conditions that many people say only in a whisper.
• Decisions, decisions, decisions. MLSs inform approximately 60 to 70 percent of all patient diagnoses, treatment, and hospital admission and discharge decisions through the tests they perform.
What Do MLSs Do?
• Examine and analyze blood, body fluids, tissues, and cells.
• Utilize microscopes, cell counters, and other high-precision lab equipment.
• Cross-match blood for transfusion.
• Establish quality assurance programs to monitor and ensure the accuracy of test results.

Our program has reached NAACLS Serious Applicant Status, which means upon successful completion of the program, our students are eligible to sit for the ASCP BOC exam.

Admission
- The University partners with healthcare partners to enroll students in the MLS program who are fully prepared and qualified to engage with a reasonable expectation of success.
- The student must have a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, physical or biological sciences from an accredited university.
- The laboratories, where the students are employed either as part-time or full-time employees, verify the bachelor’s degree above as well as their transcripts and additional certification based on the job description. These include 1. MD or DO with a current medical license; OR 2. Doctoral degree in clinical laboratory science, chemical, physical or biological science; OR 3. Master’s degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory, chemical, physical, or biological science; OR 4. Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory, chemical, physical or biological.
- The above requirements are what we, at Oak Point University, are looking for regarding the educational portion of the program and to be eligible to receive a certificate of completion for the Medical Laboratory Program once the 9-month program is completed.
- All students are employees of the laboratory and there are minimum requirements regarding being accepted into the program that must be met.
- The admission criteria, essential functions for both the working side and the educational side as well as student outcomes are shared with all the applicants who are a part of this opportunity.
